Los Angeles, CA., Dec. 28, 2022/ The family, and friends of Nichelle Nichols have announced the launch of a foundation in her name to inspire the next generation. On what would have been her 90th birthday, the foundation will continue to carry out the dream she had started during her life impacting the community around her. The Nichelle Nichols Foundation will partner with existing organizations that have a proven track record of outreach, scholarships, training, and mentorship to increase women and diversity in STEAM.
Nichelle’s younger sister Marian who is the President of the Foundation stated, “Education is the gateway to dreams, and our young people are our future. With Nichelle Nichols as our guiding star, we continue the mission to make an impact in young people’s lives and create a path for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) related education and careers. The Nichelle Nichols Foundation (NNF) will advance her dream to inspire future generations who will shape our world in the image of Star Trek and its “Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations” (IDIC) philosophy: a world that is diverse, kind, and peaceful.”
The foundation will continue her legacy by supporting grants to increase and expand existing programs, help fund grants to create and launch new programs that will remove barriers and provide support to individuals from underserved populations and provide scholarships to students to attend college and pursue a career in a STEAM focused field.
In the words of Nichelle Nichols:
“Science is not a boy’s game, it’s not a girl’s game. It’s everyone’s game. It’s about where we are and where we’re going. Space travel benefits us here on Earth. And we ain’t stopped yet. There’s more exploration to come.”
The Nichelle Nichols Foundation beamed aboard advisors, who are lifelong Star Trek fans. The advisors were inspired to boldly go and have done amazing things with their life in both business and STEAM focused careers. They are an example of why representation and inspiration are so important to young people. They will continue the legacy of Nichelle and will be led by Star Trek actor Walter Koenig, best known for his role as Chekov in Star Trek.
