Were you aware of Star Trek’s special tie to Cleveland and the Cleveland Police Department? Star Trek was created by Gene Roddenberry, a decorated WWII bomber pilot and former Los Angeles, California, police motorcycle unit officer. Gene’s wife, actress Majel Barrett, known as the “First Lady of Star Trek,” was born and raised here in the Cleveland area. Her father, grandfather, and uncle were all Cleveland Police officers, and her father, Officer William Hudec and his partner, Officer Warren Stainbrook, were killed in the line of duty on August 30, 1955.

I am Captain of the Cleveland chapter of The Federation, the USS Challenger, and we will be hosting a fundraiser in sponsorship of the 15th Annual Heroes Run on on Tuesday, August 30, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., at P.J. McIntyres Irish Pub located at 17119 Lorain Avenue.

The all-day event will feature a Dine & Donate component where 20% of your meal tab, including beverages, will be contributed to the Heroes Run when you present the attached event flyer to your server. The flyer may also be downloaded at The fundraiser includes a 50-50 raffle and door prizes. Music will be donated by local musicians. USS Challenger crew members will be on hand all day in full Star Trek uniform and photographs are welcome. Information about the West Park Memorial Organization, 15th Annual Heroes Run, and Cleveland Police Museum will be available.

Additionally, we have a very special GRAND PRIZE for the raffle!  Rod Roddenberry Jr., a lifetime member of The Federation, is the grandson of Officer William Hudec. Rod is an Executive Director of the new Star Trek TV series launching on CBS in January, and is donating an autographed copy of his award winning documentary about his father’s life, “Trek Nation.” Rod endorses The Federation as the Roddenberry family approved fan organization, has donated to the Cleveland Police Museum, and has fond memories of his father enthusiastically talking about “this new fan club in Cleveland that really gets it” concerning helping people and “Living the Dream” of IDIC – Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, that was integral to his vision for a hopeful future for all mankind.”

Please join me and the crew of the USS Challenger in honoring our fallen heroes! You can help make certain that the West Park Memorial organization will be support the families of our fallen heroes for many years to come!
